Although Mikel Arteta has talked candidly about his first “terrifying” experience as manager of Arsenal five years ago, he is now accepting the challenge of attaining excellence. The 42-year-old manager of Arsenal is the third longest-serving manager in the Premier League after successfully changing the club’s culture and turning the Gunners into a formidable title contender.

The early days of the endeavor were a little daunting, Arteta admits, but he now thrives under the constant pressure of the top flight. “I was probably terrified,” he acknowledged. It seemed intimidating to take on such a significant job in the middle of the season, especially without any prior top-level expertise or even support staff. My resolve to uphold their confidence was only strengthened by observing the decision-makers, who were so confident in my abilities. This club is really special to me, and I wanted to make sure I didn’t disappoint anyone. The only way to go was to take each day as it came, cultivate connections with the staff and players, and figure out how to make it work.”
