Mikel Artta has issued a stark warning to his Arsenal players ahead of Sunday’s crucial North London Derby: if you cannot handle the pressure of a title race, you should find another club.
The Arsenal manager is preparing his squad for a hostile environment at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend.
With the Gunners currently sitting at the top of the Premier League table, Arteta acknowledges that the scrutiny will only intensify.
However, he insists that external criticism is simply part of the job description for his players.
“You ask them the question: Do you want to be part of the noise, or not? If not, go and do something else,” Arteta stated firmly.
“Be part of a different club, or do you want to be Arsenal? For 10 or 15 years, everybody demanded that we need to get back there fighting for the title.
Now we are there, and now what? You don’t want the noise? Noise is part of it, and the bullets are part of it.”
The Spaniard’s comments come after his side faced accusations of being “bottlers” following a disappointing draw with bottom-of-the-table Wolves.
In that match, Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead, dropping vital points in the title fight.
Arteta swiftly denied those claims, but the result extended a worrying trend; the team has now won only two of their last seven league outings.
Despite the recent stutter, Arsenal’s destiny remains in their own hands. Arteta reminded his squad that they control only one thing: the next performance.
“We have to do what we have to do. At the end, you have to win the next match, and if you do that, you are going to be in a much stronger position.”
To complicate matters, captain Martin Ødegaard remains a doubt for the clash. The Norwegian has struggled for form and fitness this season, managing just 45 minutes of action across the last five games due to a string of injuries.
Arteta admitted the skipper’s limited availability has been “far from ideal,” but he praised the team for maintaining their level despite missing key personnel.
As the pressure mounts, Arteta’s message is clear: his squad must embrace the chaos or make way for those who will.
