FC Schalke decided to sign the player on a six-month deal after his contract was mutually terminated with the Gunners.
Mustafi was looking to leave last summer and had even turned down a contract extension. He leaves Arsenal permanently along with Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac in the winter transfer window.
Schalke had a role to fill up when Ozan Kabak departed for Liverpool on a loan deal. Anfield’s injury crisis forced them to pick the talented Turkish international with a permanent option to buy.
The Gunners are due to receive a small compensation fee for Mustafi’s transfer. The German international will join Kolasinac at the VELTINS-Arena. Kolasinac is captaining his boyhood club through a difficult period.
Mustafi arrived at Arsenal for £35m in 2016. After a four-and-a-half year period, he remains one of the worst bits of business Arsenal have ever done. The centre-back made some ridiculous errors in his Arsenal career and was never an improvement he was chalked up to be.
Getting him and his massive wages out of the club is a good move. This along with other exits opens up the space for other improvements to be made next summer.
