Former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has expressed unwavering confidence in Mikel Arteta’s ability to lead the Gunners to Premier League glory, despite the team’s recent setbacks.
Arsenal’s unexpected 1-0 defeat to West Ham United last Saturday has widened the gap between them and league leaders Liverpool to 11 points, intensifying the pressure on Arteta and his squad.
Giroud, who shared the pitch with Arteta during his six-year tenure at the Emirates Stadium, believes that his former teammate possesses the resilience and tactical acumen necessary to overcome these challenges.
“Mikel has done a great job,” Giroud remarked.
“He’s brought Arsenal back to near the top of the league. I would love to see them win the league. The competition is really tough, but Mikel will never give up.”
This season, Arsenal has demonstrated significant progress under Arteta’s guidance, currently sitting second in the Premier League standings with 53 points from 26 matches.
However, Liverpool’s consistent performance has set a high bar, as they lead the table with 64 points from 27 matches. Arteta has acknowledged the challenges but remains steadfast in his belief that his team can still vie for the title.
“We have to use the anger and disappointment from our recent defeat to fuel our determination,” Arteta stated.
“There’s still a lot to play for, and we must focus on improving our performance.”
Giroud also touched upon the situation at Chelsea, another of his former clubs, noting the significant changes and challenges they face.
“They changed so many things and they’re rebuilding the team with a lot of young, talented players,” he observed.
“I think they have a bright future.”
As the season progresses, Arsenal’s upcoming fixtures will be crucial in determining their title aspirations.
The team’s ability to rebound from recent disappointments and maintain pressure on Liverpool will be essential.
With Arteta at the helm and the backing of former players like Giroud, the Gunners remain hopeful of ending their long-standing Premier League title drought.
