Mesut Ozil’s teammate from Arsenal, Shkodran Mustafi has came forward to support Ozil’s decision to retire from International Football and continue to play for clubs.
Mustafi supported by saying that the decision is ‘Ozil’s personal decision’.
Ozil face criticism after Germany’s group stage exit from World Cup. Ozil claimed that the criticism of his performances amounted to “racism” and no senior player came forward to defend him.
Mustafi along with Ozil was a part of the German squad when they won World Cup in 2014. But the footballer has came forward to speak in support of his friend and teammate.
In talks with media, the player said, “It did surprise me. He made his decision after this time off when he was by himself and thinking about his future,”
“I think it is a personal decision he made. As a team-mate and a friend, I stand beside him and if he needs help, I’m going be there for him. Of course, I’m a bit disappointed because I think he’s an excellent footballer who has given a lot to the German national team.”
“From my point of view, he is going to be missed but it is a personal decision and we have to respect that.”
Mustafi and Ozil are persently at Singapore for Arsenal’s pre-season tour.
Mustafi also spoked about Sokratis Papastathopoulos who joined the club in the ongoing transfer window.
he said, “Well, the pressure is always on. You have to defend your spot in the team always and if you’re not in the team, the pressure is there to claim a spot in the 11,”
“It is nothing new. We are professionals and we have to handle pressure and perform.”
