Paul Merson has called on Arsenal to make a bold move in the transfer market, suggesting that the signing of Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak could be the key to ending Manchester City’s dominance in the Premier League.
The former Arsenal midfielder believes the Swedish striker could tip the scales in favor of the Gunners as they chase their first league title since 2004.
Arsenal, under Mikel Arteta, have come close to Premier League glory in recent seasons, finishing second in the last two campaigns.
With the 2024-25 season approaching, the pressure is on to finally dethrone Manchester City, who have claimed the title for four consecutive years.
Merson, who has never been shy about sharing his opinions, insists that Isak’s arrival at the Emirates could be the final piece of the puzzle.
“If Arsenal sign Isak, they win the league. Simple as that,” Merson stated, making his case for why the Gunners should “break the bank” for the 24-year-old striker.
Isak, who netted 21 Premier League goals for Newcastle last season, has rapidly become one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe. His pace, technical ability, and clinical finishing make him an ideal fit for Arsenal’s attacking style.
While Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz have been solid options for Arteta, Merson argues that Isak offers a level of consistency in front of goal that could elevate Arsenal to the top.
However, prying Isak away from Newcastle won’t be easy. The Magpies reportedly value the striker at £177 million, a figure that would shatter Arsenal’s transfer record.
But for Merson, the potential rewards far outweigh the financial risk. “This is the kind of signing that could make Arsenal champions again,” Merson concluded.
