5. Harry Kane is one of players Arsenal should not have sold

By now everyone knows the story of how Harry Kane got rejected by Arsenal when he was only 9 years old and then he went to become one of the world’s top strikers with arch-rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.

it was Liam Brady who was in charge of the Gunners youth academy and had decided to let go of Kane because of him being ‘a bit chubby’ and ‘unathletic’. Arsene Wenger later admitted to regretting the decision.

Kane was not initially successful at Tottenham, failing on his first trial but was given a second opportunity when he impressed for Watford. Now, after 15 years, he is the number one striker for England with 39 caps and 22 international goals. Serge Gnabry might be one of the biggest regrets for Arsenal, the price of which they are paying today. The German speedster flew out of his home town, Stuttgart to sign for Arsenal in a £150,000 deal in 2011.

He bet on himself to succeed and saw a glimpse of that opportunity in the 2013/14 season when Theo Walcott got injured ahead of a Stoke City game. Gnabry was still a bit raw but his potential to create and score showed through his first-ever senior goal against Swansea City in the next game.

Gnabry earned a nomination for the 2013 Golden Boy award and signed a new five-year contract that season. Unfortunately, the winger got sidelined with a knee injury the next season and had to be loaned out to West Bromwich Albion.

Arsenal gave up hope on him and tried to make a quick profit by banking £5m from his sale to Werder Bremen. Gnabry burst onto the scene with 11 goals in 27 Bundesliga appearances in his debut season.

Bayern Munich quickly took notice and activated a clause in his contract which meant that they could sign him for only €8m. Now, the 23-year-old is a starting figure in the Allianz Arena, predicted to succeed into Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery’s spot as the legendary duo is set to depart this summer. Just like Robin Van Persie, Ashley Cole’s sale to Chelsea should have been killed off immediately. The English left-back was one of the key members of the Invincibles squad who won the Premier League twice and the FA Cup three times with the club.

It was a long and drawn-out transfer saga which ended quite poorly for Arsenal. They ended up losing one of the best ever players to a title rival for only £5m in cash and William Gallas (even though he was decent during his time with the Gunners the trade was not worth it).

His departure was quite sudden and came as a shock to many. Barcelona paid €24m for the Frenchman and stuck a release clause worth €125m to his contract. Henry’s reasons for leaving were tied by behind the departure of former Arsenal co-owner and vice-chairman David Dein and uncertainty of Arsene Wenger’s future at the club.

He was quoted to have said, “I always said that if I ever left Arsenal it would be to play for Barcelona.”

Later, when Arsenal started the 2007/08 season in impressive fashion, Henry revealed, “Because of my seniority, the fact that I was captain and my habit of screaming for the ball, they would sometimes give it to me even when I was not in the best position. So in that sense it was good for the team that I moved on.”
