Ray Parlour thinks Mesut Ozil could appear out of the cold and captain Arsenal in the Carabao Cup fixture tonight.
The Gunners are due to face Liverpool at Anfield and their chosen leader, Granit Xhaka is likely to be stripped off of the captain’s armband.
Ozil has been casted out of the Arsenal squad all season but Parlour believes he could make a shock appearance tonight. The German was made captain before by Emery and his seniority could be considered once again for this League Cup tie.
“It might be Ozil. It’ll be interesting,” Parlour told The Debate. “Bellerin will probably come in, he’s been there many years now. Whether he can be captain material, I’m not too sure.
“Rob Holding is another one at centre-half, can he be captain material? We’ll have to wait and see. It’ll be interesting to see who is captain. I think if Ozil starts, I think he’s the one who will probably get the captain’s armband.”
Emery has a style of picking 5 players to shoulder the captaincy responsibilities throughout a regular season. Last season, he had picked Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal, Petr Cech, Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil.
Out of the 5 players, 3 have left and the other two are facing the full wrath of the Arsenal supporters. The fans would ideally like to see Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put on the captain’s armband mostly because of his outstanding levels of performance on the pitch.
