Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has tested positive for Covid-19 and has therefore been forced to withdraw from the England squad for the upcoming friendly matches
The teenager has been an important player for the Gunners this season and would have hoped to bring his raw enthusiasm to the pitch for the Three Lions as they prepare to face Switzerland and the Ivory Coast.
The Gunners will hope that he is asymptomatic and that he has no ill-effects that will prevent him from returning to action in the coming weeks, but all we know for now is that he will miss England’s two forthcoming matches.
Arsenal’s only two remaining Arsenal players in the team are Emile Smith Rowe and Ben White, with Aaron Ramsdale also ruled out, although both Saka and Ramsdale’s places in the squad should not be in danger for the World Cup in December.
It would have been a fantastic opportunity for the two absentees to establish a claim for a first-team spot ahead of the tournament, but Saka’s absence might work in his teammates’ favour, with ESR hopefully picking up more minutes.
Could Saka’s absence allow a rival to move ahead of him in the pecking order?
