Arsenal might be encouraged to hear about AS Roma’s postponed plans to extend Nicolo Zaniolo’s contract.
The 19-year-old playmaker is reportedly in Unai Emery’s transfer shortlist for the summer. He scored a wonderful goal 1-1 draw against AC Milan to further raise questions regarding his future with the Serie A outfit.
Zaniolo was brought in from Inter Milan last summer as part of an exchange deal for Radja Nainaggolan along with Davide Santon. The youngster has quickly established as a key figure in Eusebio Di Francesco’s squad, making 20 appearances this season and scoring on 3 occasions.
He has also won 4 caps for the Italy U21 side and 18 for the U19s. Zaniolo’s development has been charged by the maturity he has shown on the pitch.
Roma have promised the teenage sensation and his family that a more lucrative deal will be offered next summer. Both parties have agreed to wait till the season end to discuss terms.
Arsenal have already accepted their fate in losing Aaron Ramsey on a free transfer to Juventus next June. This could potentially complicate proceedings for the Gunners if a replacement is not signed.
Denis Suarez’s agreement with Barcelona is set to last for only 6 months and there is no guarantee of a permanent purchase.
Alex Iwobi started off the season in fine form but has been disappointing in recent times. Mesut Ozil has fallen out of off Emery’s favour at the Emirates and Henrikh Mkhitaryan continues to be an injury concern.
Arsenal might have a greater need to aggressively pursue Zaniolo’s services right now before letting Roma satisfy the youngster’s demands.
