Sokratis Papastathopoulos is more than likely to leave Arsenal this summer as the Greek international weighs out his options.
Italian reporter, Nicolo Shira claims that Sokratis’ time at the Emirates is coming to an end after the defender lost his starting spot under Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners will be looking to add more quality to their defensive setup which means a bunch of current players will have to be sacrificed. Sokratis has more or less been a regular in the squad since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund in 2018. However, at 31 years of age, his weaknesses have been exposed. Sokratis lacks the playmaking ability that Arteta demands from both of his centre-halfs. That is a central reason behind David Luiz playing so many minutes under the Spaniard.
Sokratis has featured at centre-back just once in the last 10 games for Arsenal and three times at right-back. His contract is due to end in June 2021 and this is his only chance to secure a big move in his career. The 31-year-old still got the legs to play for a top-flight club and will also be a relatively cheap option.
Selling him along with a few others could fund the arrival of a top centre-back like Dayot Upamecano or Unai Nunez.
