England manager Gareth Southgate addressed his team’s goalkeeping situation.
England manager Gareth Southgate has backed Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to get back to his best form. The English goalkeeper is struggling to get regular games under Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal signed David Raya on loan from Brentford. The Spanish shot-stopper has taken the role of first-choice goalkeeper. The Gunners are even considering him to offer a permanent deal.
Ramsdale was thrust into action against Brentford due to Raya’s ineligibility. The 25-year-old made an unforced error which subsequently led to a Brentford goal. He would make amends for a number of crucial saves and Arsenal won it 2-1 to strengthen its position on top.
While talking during the press conference, England manager Gareth Southgate addressed his team’s goalkeeping situation.
“We have chosen the three goalkeepers who we think are the best. It is not ideal that Aaron does not play. But he showed last week that he has the mental toughness to play for England when he responded to the mistake that he made.
“We still believe that he can force his way back into the Arsenal team. It will probably be more difficult after the penalty shootout the other day, I could imagine. But he just has to keep pushing and training well every day.”
England will take on Brazil and Belgium in this upcoming international break. Ramsdale will have a chance to prove his worth to the national team.
