Takehiro Tomiyasu will sign a new long-term contract this January.

The Japanese international has proved to be an integral member of Mikel Arteta’s squad despite not being an automatic starter at the club.

Tomiyasu had to deal with several injuries and subsequently lost his starting place to Ben White.

There has been a lot of interest in the 25-year-old defender this January but Mikel Arteta is not keen to offload him and rather offer him a new contract with a significant pay rise.

He has made a total of 73 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions and remains 100% of the club’s plans.

Transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that both parties are advancing into the final stages of negotiation.

Romano said: “There have been many rumours about Tomiyasu possibly moving to Italy with the likes of Milan, Napoli, Roma, but he’s staying – a move was never possible. Probably the most serious option was about Inter in the summer, but Arsenal rejected that one too.

“Tomiyasu is part of the Arsenal project and the idea is to extend his contract. There is big optimism as things look to be advancing in that direction. The Japan international has been in fine form this season and he will get a pay rise with his new deal. There will be more talks in the next days and weeks to get it done.”
