Former FC Barcelona and Arsenal F.C. legend Thierry Henry believes Barcelona’s defensive frailties mean they are no threat to Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League this season.

Speaking after Barcelona’s 3-3 draw with Club Brugge, Henry highlighted the urgency for improvement if the Catalan side is to challenge Europe’s elite.

Barcelona were forced to come from behind three times to salvage a draw in Belgium, and the result leaves them far from ideal in their group.

Head coach Hansi Flick insisted his team would not change how they defend, saying they still believe in their offside trap and high-line system, despite conceding early and being undone by pace.

Henry, however, was blunt in his criticism. “The coordination [in defence] is so bad … You can’t win the Champions League like this, it’s very difficult.”

He argued that if Barcelona hope to knock out teams such as Arsenal, they must become far more stable.

“Every time hoping to score three or four, to be the team – not now, not in the modern era of football,” Henry said on CBS Sports

The Frenchman’s verdict is clear: unless Barcelona improve defensively they lack the substance for knockout rounds. Flick’s unwillingness to alter his defensive philosophy gives Henry little hope.

With the draw exposing recurring issues, Barcelona now have to reconcile their ambition with major structural weaknesses – or risk being eliminated by sides like Arsenal before the final stages.
