Declan Rice might have grabbed headlines with a sensational brace of free-kicks in Arsenal’s emphatic 3-0 win over Real Madrid, but club legend Thierry Henry believes there was one player who shone even brighter on the night — Bukayo Saka.
“He Ran the Show” – Henry Says Saka Deserves More Credit Than Rice vs Real Madrid
While Rice’s performance will be remembered as one of the finest by an Englishman in Champions League history, Henry was quick to shift the spotlight to the 23-year-old winger who, in his eyes, was the real architect behind Arsenal’s triumph.
Speaking on CBS Sports after the game, Henry said, “Declan Rice came big on the two free-kicks but ultimately, for me, Bukayo Saka created everything. The two fouls were on him.”
He highlighted how Saka’s fearless drive and close control forced Real Madrid into desperate challenges, leading to both set-piece goals scored by Rice.
“Every time, taking the ball, running past one to two to three to four players to go inside and get the free-kicks,” Henry continued.
“That’s what changed the game.”
Saka’s impact went far beyond drawing fouls. He consistently carried the ball into dangerous areas, tormented Real’s backline with his quick feet, and played a key role in stretching their defence to create space for others to thrive.
Declan Rice, in turn, was full of admiration for Saka’s efforts, praising his teammate post-match.
“Look, to come back in the time he has is unbelievable — he’s unreal,” Rice told CBS Sports.
“He’s a top guy, we need to be ready next week because the Bernabéu is another challenge.”
With the second leg looming at the Santiago Bernabeu, Saka’s performance has not only earned plaudits from fans and pundits but also the heartfelt appreciation of Arsenal’s greatest-ever striker.
And if the Gunners are to finish the job in Spain, Saka’s brilliance may again be the key to unlocking another historic result.
