Villarreal is expected to sign Thomas Partey, a former midfielder for Arsenal. After undergoing a medical examination, Partey, 32, is anticipated to sign a two-year contract with the Spanish team that would last until 2027.
When leaving Arsenal when his contract expired in June, the Ghanaian international is now a free agent, and the opportunity to play Champions League games was considered a key component of the suggested transfer to Villarreal.
Partey was charged on July 4 with one count of sexual assault and five charges of rape. The accusations are denied by him. In February 2022, an inquiry was initiated against him, and he continued to play for the Premier League team before his contract expired. His next court appearance is set for Tuesday, August 5.
Partey reportedly had discussions about staying at the Emirates Stadium, but the details of a deal could not be agreed upon, according to The Athletic.
For Arsenal in the 2024–25 season, Partey made 52 appearances. He paid €50 million (now £45.4 million, $58.7 million) to join the team in 2020 from Atletico Madrid.
Manager Mikel Arteta declared that he was “100 percent” certain Arsenal handled Partey in accordance with the right procedures. “Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him,” stated Jenny Wiltshire, the defense attorney.
“During the course of the three-year inquiry, he has provided the police and CPS with complete cooperation.” Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further.” He now embraces the chance to fully cleanse his reputation.
Officers initially received an allegation of rape in February 2022, which prompted an investigation against the defensive midfielder. The Crown Prosecution Service stated that it “carefully reviewed a comprehensive file of evidence” before making the charge.
Partey continued to play a significant role for Arteta’s team in 2024–25, making 52 appearances across all competitions. During the Gunners’ defensive struggles last season, Partey started at right-back in addition to his typical defensive midfield position. Since joining in 2020, he has made 167 appearances, scoring nine goals and dishing out seven assists.
