Arsenal have been dealt a significant blow to their midfield ranks ahead of their next clash with Watford.
Both Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira have picked up knocks while on international duty with Switzerland and Uruguaya respectively.
Xhaka has been suffering from Achilles pain for some time and the 26-year-old is feared to have aggravated it. There is no telling when he will return but the Sunday fixture could be a sure miss.
Torreira is still nursing a small knock. He is due to be further assessed, leaving Unai Emery to pick from the likes of Mesut Ozil, Dani Ceballos and Joe Willock for the open midfield spots.
Matteo Guendouzi is almost a guaranteed starter even though he got called on international duty for the first time. Nicolas Pepe is a bit of fitness concern after he withdrew from international duty this past week. The Ivorian stayed back at London to work on his overall fitness but does not have any injuries.
In other news, Hector Bellerin, Rob Holding and Kieran Tierney have all returned to full training with the rest of the team. Having them back gives Emery a huge boost ahead of September’s fixtures.
Arsenal are now, fifth in the Premier League standings after winning 2, drawing 1 and losing 1. Emery is finally settling into a formation that he likes to operate in. We got to witness that against Tottenham Hotspur in the 2-2 draw last Saturday.
