He believes the player deserves to extend his stay beyond this season
Nacho Monreal joined Arsenal from Malaga for an undisclosed fee, signing a long term contract back in the January transfer window of 2013. He has been a mainstay in the defense since then and established himself as a key player for the club.
The Spain International featured in 28 Premier League games last season under former manager Arsene Wenger, scoring 5 goals and providing 2 assists. However, Gunners finished 6th in the league, missing out on Champions League football this season.
The full-back has started 3 matches under new manager Unai Emery this season and scored an important equalizer against West Ham United. After losing their first 2 games against Chelsea and Manchester City, they won their next two against Hammers and Cardiff City.
The 32 year old confirmed earlier that he is in talks with the club over a new deal and Emery is also keen to see him stay beyond this season.
“First, I knew Nacho Monreal in Spain when he was playing in Osasuna and in Malaga,” the Spaniard told a news conference, as quoted by Goal, ahead of Saturday’s trip to Newcastle United.
“After six years here, I came and I know him as a new Nacho Monreal. After two weeks, after two months and now, I can say that I am very happy with him because he is 32 years old but I think physically, with his performances with us in matches, he is playing with a very good level.
“The rest of that, for me, is very important. I think we need to find a new contract with him to stay with the Arsenal team.”
The London Outfit’s Europa League campaign will get underway against Vorskla next Thursday.
