Arsenal came back from a 5-1 Anfield humiliation last night with a 4-1 victory over Fulham.

The Gunners did grab all three points but also came close to losing it all against Claudio Ranieri’s side. The Cottagers, like every other team in the Premier League and Liverpool last year, walked through the Arsenal defence to create open scoring chances.

Unai Emery and the players might consider themselves fortunate to see Ryan Sessgnon miss his two clear shots on goal. If relegation riddled sides can open up Arsenal’s defence with such ease, it clearly is Emery’s most obvious problems that he needs to address.

In the Fulham post-match interview, the Spanish head coach admitted to how the Gunners backline needs to improve. He said, “Our challenge now is to improve defensively. We are very happy with the attacking players and scoring a lot of goals like today. We are high team in terms of scoring.”

“We need defence also to take more balance and improve. We need to work. We need to prepare for the second half of the season. We need to do better in the second half of the season, tactically and we are going to do that.”

With a 5 point gap behind Chelsea from the top four spots, Arsenal realistically still have a chance to climb their way up the table. But it is becoming apparent with every game that a centre-back signing and maybe a defensive coach is of the utmost necessary at the Emirates.
