Unai Emery has asked Arsenal fans to stop watching him during games and to focus on the players on the pitch.
The Spaniard has been noticed several times to be passionately reacting to every incident on the pitch – be it scraps with opposition players or a certain instant of simply winning back a ball.
Arsenal themselves promoted a video of their manager throwing his arms in the air when Joe Willock ran back in midfield to win back possession from a Newcastle United player. The video turned viral on social platforms and many have been taking note of the manager’s antics in each game.
Emery, instead wants the fans to watch the actual game. Prior to the North London derby on Sunday, he said, “I’m not the protagonist, the players are the protagonists. The most important thing is the team. Maybe after the match, there can be footage of me and other things for the supporters to look at.
“But the most important camera is always the one following my players on the pitch. I really, really want the focus of everyone to be on them until after the game.”
He added, “I’ve been doing this all my career – in Spain, in France and now here. It’s always the same in each country because I want to be active. I want to help and support the players. That’s all!
“Each match with Arsenal I’m feeling special and that means I can be as I am – with my personality, my character. But my responsibility is the team and to give them the best solutions. The more difficult work is for them. For the coach, it’s about giving them energy and, above all, being intelligent in the management of the 90 minutes.”
