The Spaniard has won three Europa League title with his former club Sevilla
Arsenal had a very busy summer as Unai Emery was appointed as the new manager of the club after Arsene Wenger decided to leave the club after 22 years. The Spaniard signed a three-year deal worth £15 million.
He was given the charge with the task of rebuilding the squad and returning the club to the European elite while challenging for other major honours, after they finished sixth in the Premier League last season resulting in missing the Champions League this season.
However, the Gunners didn’t got off to a great start as they have begun life under the Spaniard with back-to-back defeats in the Premier League against their big rivals Chelsea and Manchester City.
But they won their next two fixtures against West Ham United and Cardiff City. They will look to continue their momentum after the International break.
However, the London Outfit have not been tipped to win the Premier League this season as it has been suggested they will take to get accustomed to the way the manager wants to play and will need more world class signings.
Club legend Paul Merson has urged Emery to focus on winning the Europa League as it will be their best way to to return to Champions League, as the winner automatically enter the group stage. The manager has tasted success in the competition as he has won it three times with his former club Sevilla.
“I think they’ll go for the Europa League too,” he told talkSPORT.
“I think this manager likes it, foreign managers like this competition and why not?
“Arsenal haven’t won a European trophy since 1994 [And Merson played in that game – a 1-0 win over Parma in the Cup Winners Cup final].
“They’re not going to win the Premier League, so why not have a go at it?”
