Arsenal’s record signing Viktor Gyokeres could make his highly anticipated debut in Thursday’s preseason clash against Tottenham Hotspur in Hong Kong, manager Mikel Arteta confirmed.
Gyokeres Poised for Explosive Arsenal Debut in Hong Kong Derby
The 27-year-old Swedish striker, who completed a £55 million move from Sporting Lisbon on Saturday, may feature in the historic first North London Derby staged outside the UK despite minimal training time with his new club.
Gyokeres joined Arsenal’s Asia tour immediately after signing, participating in just two light training sessions so far.
Arteta revealed the medical team will make a final decision Wednesday night: “He’s only done today’s session, yesterday very little.
We’re going to assess tonight how he is. If the medical staff are happy with his condition to participate tomorrow, it’s a possibility”.
The striker missed Sporting’s preseason to force through his Arsenal move, leaving him playing catch-up physically.
Should he feature, Gyokeres will wear the iconic No. 14 shirt previously donned by Thierry Henry – a number he called “an honor” to inherit.
His arrival has already shattered club merchandise records, with shirt sales surpassing any previous Arsenal signing.
Captain Martin Odegaard voiced excitement about his new teammate: “He’s physical, strong, fast, a good finisher, and intelligent.
You can already see the quality, energy, and willingness. I’m excited to share the pitch with him”.
Gyokeres’ statistics justify the hype: 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting, including a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City last season.
The stage is set for a blockbuster introduction at Hong Kong’s sold-out Kai Tak Stadium, where 20,000 fans watched Gyokeres train Wednesday.
For Arsenal supporters, the derby offers a tantalizing first glimpse of the striker tasked with ending their 21-year Premier League title drought.
