Viktor Gyokeres was hauled down in Fulham’s penalty area, and it was unfortunate for Arsenal that they were not given a spot kick. The new signing’s attempt to stay on his feet backfired on him with Anthony Taylor, according to former PGMOL chief and former FIFA referee Keith Hackett, who made this revelation exclusively to Football Insider.
Not pointing to the penalty spot in the 55th minute was one of Taylor’s many defining errors at Craven Cottage, according to the former PGMOL chief. The Sweden international, Gyokeres, battled with Jorge Cuenca inside the box after joining Arsenal for £63 million this summer, but he made an effort to stay upright with a goal in sight.
That might have been detrimental to the striker. Since Gyokeres joined Arsenal in the summer, he has been under pressure. The Portuguese powerhouse won Liga Portugal last season thanks to the 39 goals the Swede scored for Sporting CP.
At Craven Cottage on Saturday night, Gyokeres managed three shots, but Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta feels that the forward’s inability to score again was the only frustrating aspect of the match.
Ahead of Fulham’s triumph, Arteta said he isn’t concerned about Gyokeres’ lacklustre run in front of goal and that his faith in the striker comes from a talk they had in the summer before Arsenal signed him.
Gyokeres attempted to stay upright and try to score a goal against Bernd Leno, but he lost his footing after what looked to be a clip on his ankle.
The former referee stated in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, “Anthony Taylor was in an excellent position.” To be honest, Taylor didn’t recognise the infraction because the player didn’t go to ground. I believe Taylor would have been pointing to the penalty spot if the guy had gone down right away. It was unfortunate that Arsenal did not receive a penalty kick.
