They were and are still probably known as the lesser spenders of the traditional top four. In the Wenger era, money would hardly go out to buy players, despite the club making significant revenues by selling top players like RVP, Fabregas and Nasri to name a few.
It was Wenger’s strategy to sell high and develop local talent. However, under Emery, the board seems to have finally splashed money to ensure that top four comes through.
This summer, they signed Nicolas Pepe from Ligue 1 side Lille for a world record fee. They signed experienced Chelsea defender David Luiz and also brought in Scottish talent Kieran Tierney from Celtic for a pretty nice price tag. They also loaned in Dani Ceballos from Real Madrid whose wages certainly wont be low.
All things considered, it was an expensive summer for the Gunners and the results are not so bad of it with Arsenal still only one of the two sides to remain undefeated in this season’s Premier League.
However, for those Arsenal fans hoping for more introductions in January, we have some sad news as reports are confirming that Unai Emery is content with his side and is planning no further signings in January.
