Mikel Arteta was not allowed to recall Saliba back midway through the campaign with Saint Etienne holding strong on their demands.
Despite a €30m summer transfer, the 18-year-old had to left back at France for at least one more season. In hindsight, it could turn out to be a positive thing since Arsenal have been so poor this season. Saliba is still very much a prospect and could use the playing time he is currently enjoying back in his home country.
“I am not at 100%, but I am getting there game-by-game,” Saliba said. “It is formative for me as well to go through difficult times. We must be strong mentally speaking. We are not down.
“This season, many players are getting injured, we are unlucky but it is not an excuse. We must get better, still, we have to fight against that [our bad luck].”
Saliba spent a major part of the season out injured but has been otherwise, very effective for Etienne. When asked about his future with Arsenal, the centre-back replied, “For now, I am 300% focused on Saint-Etienne. Next season, I will be at Arsenal so we will talk about them then. I am still following their results.”
Perhaps the youngster mainting his focus to such a high degree is a good thing. Professionalism is one of the key factors big clubs look out for in young talent and Saliba seems to have that in plenty. Etienne has a few big games coming up as the Arsenal fans will have a chance to view their summer signing in action.
