Arsenal seem to have made a huge error in signing Willian from Chelsea on a free deal.
Since coming in, the Brazilian has had next to no impact on this young Arsenal side, putting up lacklustre performances one after the other.
It was earlier reported that Mikel Arteta personally wanted Willian in his team and has gone to great lengths to defend him. At least now, he admits that the criticism over the player is warranted.
When asked about the words of Arsenal legend, Tony Adams, Arteta replied, “I don’t say it’s unfair.
“The expectations of Willian and the goals he can score, the assists he can create. It’s normal that people will write things about him. We have to protect him as much as we can.”
Adams also took aim at Martin Odegaard, claiming that he was another needless addition.
Arteta added, “He’s got the potential [to become one of the best] because he’s done it. I followed him very closely when he was at Real Sociedad and he was impressive for long periods. That’s why I was so convinced he could be a player for us.”
Willian has made only 2 starts since Boxing Day but he continues to come off the bench on a regular occasion.
