New Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi has pointed to the enduring danger of Spanish giants as the Gunners pursue Champions League glory this season.
Arsenal must beware spanish clubs in Europe, says Zubimendi
Despite English clubs dominating the initial league phase, with Arsenal topping their group, Zubimendi insists his side must remain wary of historic La Liga powerhouses.
The Spanish international specifically named Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid as teams Arsenal cannot afford to underestimate.
“You should never count out Spanish teams,” Zubimendi stated in an interview with El Larguero.
“Barça reached the semifinals last year, Real Madrid is Real Madrid, and Atlético has more than enough players.”
His warning comes as Arsenal compete on four fronts. The team leads the Premier League, has reached the Carabao Cup final, remains in the FA Cup, and now advances to the Champions League knockout stages.
However, recent history shows no Premier League team has reached the final in the past two years.
Zubimendi, who joined from Real Sociedad last summer, also reflected on his adaptation to English football.
“I’ve noticed that the matches are very demanding, that everyone puts you under pressure, and that the level is very high,” he said.
In a blow to Arsenal’s squad depth, Zubimendi confirmed midfielder Mikel Merino faces a significant absence due to impending foot surgery.
“He’s a very professional person who takes care of himself,” Zubimendi noted.
“I know he’s the one who’s most hurt, but the damage his injury has done to the club is significant.”
As the Champions League knockouts approach, Zubimendi’s message is clear: while Arsenal’s form is strong, the path to European success remains fraught with proven Spanish opposition.
