The Gunners are now the honourary leaders of the “most shots conceded” club, taking on more shots from their opponents than any other outfit in Europe’s top 5 leagues.
In fact, Arsenal were so weak defensively that they let Watford take an astonishing tally of 31 shots on Sunday night at the Vicarage Road. That is the record number shot attempts conceded by the Gunners since data collection started in 2003 and also accounts for 2% of the total shots taken in the Premier League so far this season.
Quique Sanchez Flores’ men rallied back from a 2-2 deficit to deny Arsenal all three points. The Hornets deserved to come back into the game after drilling the visitors with constant attacks, especially in the second half.
Unai Emery’s substitutions were hardly of any impact as the Gunners dropped down to the 7th spot of the Premier League table after the last game week. The Spanish boss had already inherited a defensively weak side when he took over from June 2018.
After a year at Arsenal and making some defensive reinforcements, Emery was expected to at least reduce the side’s vulnerability in their backline. If anything, the North Londoners have only become worse defensively than they were the season before with David Luiz, now giving away 2 penalties in his 3 starts for them.
