Top 5 Arsenal Managers Who Flopped

Here are the Top 5 worst Arsenal managers ever based on stats and their win percentage:

5. Phil Kelso – Win Percentage Of 41.45%

Arsenal Managers Who Flopped

Phil Wade Kelso was born in Largs on the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. He managed Hibernian for one season, before taking over as manager of the newly promoted Woolwich Arsenal in 1904.

He coached the North London outfit for four years, leading the team to the FA Cup semi-finals two seasons in a row. His best result in the league was seventh in the 1906-07 season.

During his tenure as manager, Arsenal started to hit financial decline which greatly impacted their output on the pitch. Kelso decided to resign in 1908 and returned to Scotland to manage a hotel.

However, he did make his return to football, coaching Fulham in 1909. He ended up staying with the Cottagers for 15 years and turned into their longest-serving manager ever.

4. George Swindin – Win Percentage Of 40.86%

Bad Arsenal Managers

Swindin started his managerial career with Peterborough United as player-manager in 1954. He saw the team through three consecutive Midland League titles, from 1955 to 1958 and also the Fourth Round of the FA Cup in 1956–57.

The Englishman was later inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame for his contribution. He had played for Arsenal for 18 years and finally made his return in1958. His impact as a coach was immediate as the team finished in the third spot in the league.

However, the team dropped down to mid-table status over the next three seasons despite signing top players like George Eastham and Tommy Docherty.

Swindin could not deliver any silverware to the club, while the club’s rivals Tottenham Hotspur won the Double in 1960–61.

3. Billy Wright – Win Percentage Of 38.46%

Arsenal Manager With Lowest Wins

Born on 6th February 1924, William Ambrose Wright had a very successful playing career with Wolverhampton Wanderers and the England national team.

He was the first player ever to earn 100 caps for his country and even captained the Three Lions a record 90 times. He led the team through the 1950, 1954 and 1958 World Cup campaigns.

After retiring, he took up the managerial role of the England youth team in 1960. After 2 years he got appointed as the head coach of the Gunners. The North London club did find success in his initial months, finishing seventh and qualifying for Europe for the first time in their history.

However, Wright could not build on that early run of form and could only manage mediocre performances for the next 4 years.

He won only 38.46% of his matches in charge and led the team to a 14th place league finish in the 1965/66 season.

2. Leslie Knighton – Win Percentage Of 36.71%

Leslie Knighton is one of the longest-serving managers in Arsenal’s history. He coached the team from 1919 to 1925 but could never rise over the mid-table status during his tenure.

He had numerous fallouts with the club’s then-chairman, Sir Henry Norris about the players he would sign. Knighton was even involved in a doping scandal during the final year of his stay at the Highbury.

Arsenal Managers Who Flopped1. George Morrell – Win Percentage Of 36.57%

One of the earliest managers of the club, Morrell managed the club when they were still known as Woolwich Arsenal. He oversaw the club during a very serious financial struggle, even when it got bought out by Sir Henry Norris in 1910.

The Scotsman did lead the side to a 6th place finish in his debut season but then dipped all the way to 18th in the next. He wanted to leave for Leeds United in 1912 and had even applied for the position. He dropped out of the running after being persuaded by the Gunners board to stay.
