Mesut Ozil has fallen out of favour with Unai Emery with Arsenal and latest reports claim that a transfer is being considered by the club.
Ozil is the club’s highest paid player and one of Premier League’s as well. He has a mercurial status of an elite level playmaker but somehow has managed to drop out of Emery’s good books. Why?
The Spanish head coach was openly insulted when Ozil decided to throw down the captain’s armband when taken off against Crystal Palace. The German number ten was mostly ineffective during the 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park, despite being made captain and handed a start.
His overall demeanour on the pitch paired with his reluctance to work harder has not sat well with the new manager. Ozil is currently fit and ready for use and yet sits on the bench as a second stringer.
Emery dropped the 30-year-old from the entire squad for the midweek 0-2 loss against Tottenham Hotspur and has not allowed him to start in a single away game since the Palace match.
Ozil’s contract is set to run till the end of the 2020/21 season and that makes his entire transfer a bit complicated. Any interested team will hesitate to pay a 30-year-old, what Ozil makes in a week, let alone pay the monumental fee Arsenal might charge for the transfer.
It might be best for Emery to reapproach proceedings with the German and clear out the air between the two. Ozil still is a highly talented footballer with the ambition to win more silverware.
