In a surprising turn of events, Arsenal are now being linked with Real Madrid’s Keylor Navas. Unai Emery reportedly is keen on bringing the Costa Rican to the Emirates this very January.

This must come as a shock to all the Gunners faithful since their new boss did just sign Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen last summer. The £19.2m signing has slowly worked his way up the pecking order and is the current number one choice. He has impressed in between the sticks for the majority of his stay at North London but was the centre of criticism after the 3-2 Southampton weekend loss.

Arsenal were level with the Saints and were pushing for a game-winner late in the second half. Shane Long found himself with acres of space off a counter and was quick to chip the ball into the Gunners box. Leno took a gamble and tried to intercept it with his hand but missed terribly and let Charlie Austin guide in an easy header. 3-2

Speaking to the press, the German admitted to his mistake but also said that he will do it again if required. Petr Cech’s contract with Arsenal is due to end following this season and it is still unclear whether the two parties will extend their relationship or not.

Bringing in Keylor Navas could significantly complicate Leno’s situation. The former is a 3-time Champions League winner with ample experience in the top level. At 32, he plans on being a regular starter for his team and the duo might have to go at each other if a transfer is completed.

It is clear at this point that Emery needs to address some more pressing issues instead of the goalkeeping position. The defence could use some reinforcements and so could the wing positions.
