Aston Villa have signed defender Calum Chambers from Arsenal on a three-and-a half-year contract.

Chambers is Aston Villa’s fifth addition of the January transfer window. The 27-year-old, who has only appeared five times for Arsenal this season, was out of contract in the summer and comes on a free transfer.

His arrival follows the loan signings of Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona, Lucas Digne from Everton for £25 million, and Robin Olsen from Roma.

The 27-year-old Chambers can play in both central defence and at right-back, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at Villa Park for an undisclosed fee.

“It’s a great stage to be joining the club at. The club’s building momentum and it’s an exciting time to be here,” Chambers told Villa’s website. “You can really feel that being in and around the building. You can feel the energy around the place.”

Chambers had been with Arsenal since 2014, when he joined from Southampton.

He takes over for Axel Tuanzebe, whose loan from Manchester United expired earlier this month to let him to join Napoli in Italy.

Villa manager Steven Gerrard has also been linked with a move for Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

“It’s a very exciting place to be and everyone can see that from the outside. Things are happening here and it’s definitely moving in the right direction” said Chambers.
