Arsenal launch charm offensive for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez

Arsenal have begun their pursuit of Benfica attacker Darwin Nunez.

According to the report, Nunez, 22, was on Arsenal’s radar in January, with the club making first contact with the player’s agency. The Gunners are strengthening their communication with Benfica and are starting to discuss relocating to North London.

In the hunt to sign Nunez, Arsenal are said to be a few steps ahead of Newcastle and West Ham. In January, both teams were rumoured to be interested in the Uruguayan but were turned off by his asking price.

Toon were willing to pay £50 million for Nunez at one stage, but with interest in Nunez only rising, his asking price is now thought to be in the area of £67 million.

The 22-year-old has had a fantastic season, scoring 26 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions.

He has been a part of Uruguay’s national squad for two years and has been compared to fellow countryman Edinson Cavani.

Newcastle and West Ham are also rumoured to be interested, but the Gunners would be difficult to turn down, especially if they can ensure Champions League football.

They would also be able to pay him generously now that Aubameyang’s £250,000-per-week salary has been deducted off the books.
