Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero is poised to depart north London this summer, with Atletico Madrid emerging as the clear favourites to secure his signature despite a shock enquiry from arch-rivals Arsenal.

The 28-year-old Argentina international, who signed a new four-year deal at Spurs just last August, has made it clear he wants a new challenge abroad.
After Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of last season, Romero is eager to compete for league titles and Champions League football rather than continue fighting for survival.
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have made enquiries for the defender this week.
The Premier League champions are in the market for defensive cover following an injury to William Saliba.
Romano confirmed on his YouTube channel: “Arsenal spoke to the agents of Cuti Romero. Arsenal asked for information on Cuti Romero”.
However, Tottenham’s hierarchy, including owners ENIC, have firmly decided they will not sell their captain to a direct rival. Romano explained:
“The relationship, Arsenal-Tottenham, is obviously a complicated relationship. Way easier for Tottenham to give the green light to Atletico Madrid”.
Atletico Madrid have already reached an agreement in principle on personal terms with Romero.
The opportunity to work with fellow Argentine Diego Simeone is a compelling factor for the defender, who fits the aggressive, physical defensive DNA the Atletico manager demands.
The Spanish club are preparing a new official bid after seeing their opening offer turned down, with Spurs holding out for a fee of around €40 million.
Inter Milan also had an agreement with Tottenham but cannot proceed without first selling Benjamin Pavard.
With personal terms agreed and club-to-club negotiations ongoing, Atletico Madrid remain in pole position to sign the World Cup winner.
