Arsenal seems to be on top of the chasing pack for Villareal’s Pau Torres.

90min claims Manchester City and Chelsea are also behind the young defender who recently signed a contract extension.

Torres has been outstanding this season which led Villareal to reward him with a 5-year deal. His release clause did jump up to €50-75m but Arsenal hope to sign him off for much less.

The report claims that Santi Cazorla bend Arsenal’s ear in Torres’ direction. The centre-back picked up a lot of praise after his appearances on loan at Malaga last season. He has continued to impress in the La Liga and is aiming for a international callup soon.

City are in immediate need of defensive improvements and could easily barge in with a convincing offer but they are not as heavily sold on Torres as Arsenal. The Gunners are rebuilding from scratch under Unai Emery and already looks like a completely different side than the one Arsene Wenger left behind.

However, it is suspicious to think Arsenal will spend that sort of cash on a central defender now. They are due to get William Saliba next summer after spending €30m on the Saint Etienne prospect this season.

Rob Holding has also returned to the first team and could win back his starting spot soon enough. With Sokratis and David Luiz present as veterans, it is unlikely that there is an immediate need for Torres.
