Martin Keown has been really impressed by Chris Smalling lately and wants Arsenal’s next manager to sign him.
Arsenal have already started looking for Unai Emery’s replacement while Freddie Ljnugberg takes over as the caretaker boss.
One glaring problem which is floating in the faces of all Gunners fans is the team’s defensive vulnerability. Despite adding Kieran Tierney and David Luiz last summer, Arsenal are still nowhere close to having the defence of a top four side.
Keown, a former Gunners defender himself thinks Smalling will be a bargain at the price Manchester United are asking for him. He told BT Sport, “Smalling is doing exceptionally well – £13 million, the price they are putting on his head, that’s not enough. Arsenal could maybe do worse than to take him.”
Smalling has come into his own while on loan with AS Roma. When asked whether he missed his former club, the 30-year-old told Football Italia, “I do because I was there for so many years and I was used to be being part of the furniture there.
“But I am enjoying my new chapter, and hopefully I can keep affecting performances on the pitch and we can have a successful season. But right now I’m really enjoying being in Italy.”
