Since Mikel Arteta became the head coach of Arsenal, there has been a clear rise in standards at the organisation, reinstating us as one of the top clubs in Europe
How amazing is it that we came so close to beating Manchester City in the Premier League race last year? The Spaniard has Arsenal back competing in the Champions League for the first time in about six years.
Leasing out the guys who believed they were superstars was one of the most crucial things Mikel did to build a team from the group of individuals he discovered at the club. In their stead, he brought in young, ambitious players who were willing to support him and try to bring Arsenal back to its former glory. One of them fired was the great and talented player Mesut Ozil, who was replaced by Martin Odegaard. Since then, Martin Ordegaard has excelled in that role and has unquestionably completely replaced Ozil’s playmaking capabilities.
Star forward Pierre Emmerick Aubameyang was another important player dismissed. He was our captain and a superb player, but he was dismissed due to disciplinary difficulties. Gabriel Jesus was substituted for him by Mikel Arteta, although he hasn’t reached the same goal-scoring plateau as Aubameyang. In case you forgot, we recently published a piece criticising our forwards for lacking finesse in front of goal.
The Gabonese international was so proficient in front of goal in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons that he averaged 22 league goals per season in 36 appearances. With Sadio Mane and Mohammed Salah, he shared the Premier League Golden Boot for the 2018–19 season thanks to his 22 goals. Do you think we could have a top goal-scorer like that if we signed Ivan Toney? Aubamayeng provided those stats during his most successful seasons with us, but we’ve never had one before.
We will have replaced Aubameyang if Toney joins us in the January transfer window, as speculations have it, as the Brentford player is Premier League-tested and can score whenever he wants to. Toney is also a fantastic goal scorer who has already scored a lot of goals for the Brentford team. What if he surrounds himself with players who are ahead of the curve, like Saka, Martinelli, and Odegaard? He could undoubtedly be a threat in front of goal and serve as our next effective hitman.
