Arsenal secured a gritty 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday to reclaim top spot in the Premier League, but the victory came at a potential cost as two key players limped off with injuries.
Arsenal Lose Havertz and Eze to Injuries Despite Crucial Win
Ebere Eze netted the only goal just nine minutes into the match at the Emirates Stadium, converting from a well-worked corner.
However, the midfielder’s afternoon ended early when he left the pitch less than ten minutes into the second half.
Fans feared the worst, but Eze quickly eased those concerns after the final whistle.
“Yeah, I’m alright. I’m all good,” he told Sky Sports.
“Just precaution, didn’t want to do anything. Yeah, I’ll be okay.”
Kai Havertz also endured an early exit. The German forward received medical treatment just 35 minutes into the fixture before manager Mikel Arteta pulled him from the game.
Havertz headed straight down the tunnel for further assessment on his foot.
Arteta addressed both situations after the match. “Let’s see, at the moment they have to be looked after but hopefully they’re going to be okay,” the Arsenal boss said.
In his post-match press conference, he added: “Muscular niggles, we don’t think it is too much.”
Riccardo Calafiori missed the Newcastle clash entirely, but Arteta offered a promising update. “He was very close,” Arteta said, noting that Calafiori participated in a training session after Saturday’s match.
Jurrien Timber remains sidelined with a hip injury he suffered nearly six weeks ago. Arteta has not provided a recent update on the defender’s condition.
Mikel Merino continues his recovery from a foot problem, though Arteta has refused to put a timeline on his return.
“It’s a bit premature to say that [he will play again this season],” Arteta said recently.
“He’s evolving really well but it’s a bit early to answer that question.”
Arsenal sit three points clear of Manchester City, though Pep Guardiola’s side hold a game in hand. The Gunners face Atletico Madrid away on Wednesday.
