Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi is line to pen a new contract under Mikel Arteta.

Mikel Arteta wants Arsenal to offer a new deal to Shkodran Mustafi. His current deal is set to expire next season.

The German international was set to be leaving in the last summer after former boss Unai Emery told him he was free to leave the club.

There has been a turnaround of fortune for the German defender when Mikel Arteta took charge of the club in December. He started 15 of Arsenal’s 17 matches and played a key role in the Gunners back line and helped in keeping six clean sheets.

The defender has entered his final year of the contract and Arteta believes Arsenal would renew it before the start of the next season.

“That’s something the club has to address but he knows my opinion,” said Arsenal ’s head coach.

“I’m really happy with him as you can see. The way he’s playing, how committed he is with everything we’re trying to do, the level in his performance ever three or four days, he’s been really consistent.”

Mustafi is expected to start for Arsenal when they visit to Tottenham for the North London Derby on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta knows that they have a long way to go before they can compete with the League’s top two Manchester City and Liverpool.

He said: “The level of the two top teams in the league has raised so much in a very short space of time.

“There are many reasons you can analyse but the gap has become so big in the past two or three  years that we all have to make good decisions and good work to catch up and make the distance much smaller.

“And don’t think it is just one or two clubs. It is a lot of clubs that are trying to do that at the moment.”
