According to Unai Emery, Calum Chambers can be utilised in more ways than just a defender.
The Arsenal manager believes Chambers’ qualities could even see him play as a midfielder from time to time.
Chambers was written off by many Gunners fans after he failed to impress in the pre-season. Ever since, Ainsley Maitland Niles’ injury, the Englishman has fought his way back into the team, delivering solid displays against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League and Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup.
Speaking about Chambers after the 5-0 win on Tuesday, Emery said, “He helped. He helped us in the training, in the dressing room and when you need him to play right-back, centre back, left-back like tonight, and we can use him in the midfield also.”
Last season, Chambers was deployed in a defensive midfield role at Fulham. Despite the Cottagers falling down to the Championship, he did manage to catch a few eyes with his performances.
The man is technically proficient as a defender, is quick on his feet and offers a lot going forward. We have seen similar transitions like this in English players like that of Eric Dier at Tottenham Hotspur and with Declan Rice at West Ham United, both of whom have earned their places in the England national team.
With Granit Xhaka faltering in recent times and Lucas Torreira also failing to impress, could Chambers possibly find a place in Emery’s starting XI from now on?
