In a fascinating turn of events, Chelsea’s sale of Alvaro Morata could potentially open up a completely separate avenue for a Gelson Martins transfer to Arsenal.
The Gunners have been very vocal about their plans for this January window, which is to sign players only on loan. Unai Emery has been mostly preoccupied with Denis Suarez’s signing from Barcelona but the Spanish manager has shifted his attention to the Portuguese winger who is struggling at Atletico Madrid.
Martins signed with the La Liga outfit last summer but has simply made 12 appearances under Diego Simeone, registering only 442 minutes on the pitch. The 23-year-old is behind players like Angel Correa, Vitolo, Thomas Lemar and Saul Niguez in the pecking order.
Atletico are also close to signing Morata from the Blues. Chelsea themselves are finalising a 6-month loan agreement of Gonzalo Higuain as we speak which could pave the way for Morata’s switch to Wanda Metropolitano.
This could force Atletico to consider moving Martins out on a loan basis since they are not exactly hungry for a cash deal right now, reports suggest. Arsenal are also in dire need of a winger since they are yet to find replacements for Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Martins is breathtakingly fast on the wings and has the skill to beat defenders effortlessly. He not only will offer more into Arsenal’s attacking lineup, he could also help the side in their battle for a top-four Premier League finish this season.
