Arsenal boss Unai Emery has confirmed that Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery on his ankle and will be out for a long time.

Welbeck suffered a severe ankle injury during Arsenal’s Europa League clash against Sporting CP.

Following Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against Wolves yesterday, Emery spoke about Welbeck’s condition. He said, “Danny Welbeck’s injury is a big injury. We spoke with him yesterday and today. We support him with our personal relationship between the player and the staff. I think he is not going to be with us for a long time.”

Emery also said that Welbeck underwent surgery on Friday but refused to say when he will return. He said, “I think it’s better for the doctor to say to you. It’s a big injury but the outcome, the doctor can answer that better than me.”

Arsenal remain on 5th position after drawing 1-1 with Wolves yesterday. Ivan Cavaleiro opened the scoring for Wolves in the 13th minute before Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored a late equaliser. Arsenal are now three points below 4th-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

With the international break to follow, Arsenal will play their next match against Bournemouth on the 25th.
