According to the Telegraph, Unai Emery is looking to sign Emi Martinez from his former club, Arsenal.
There is still growing speculation behind the Argentine’s future after his steep rise to prominence last season. Martinez quickly grabbed the opportunity to shine when Bernd Leno got injured.
Now, he has laid claim to the number one spot even with Leno proving to be the starter for two seasons now. Martinez had been at Arsenal for over a decade now and will settle for nothing less than a regular starting role. Mikel Arteta will now have to choose between the two as the 2020/21 Premier League season gets underway in a week’s time.
If Martinez is returned to his backup role, he will surely pick up his boots and leave. Plenty of clubs are aware of the 27-year-old’s situation at North London and wants to offer him a path out. Villareal are one of those clubs, headed by Emery himself.
Arteta did start Martinez in the Community Shield victory over Liverpool while Leno looked on from the bench. The Argentine would very much like to stay at his boyhood club but his contract is also running out. Arsenal’s two options are – convince him into signing a contract extension or sell him on for a fraction of what he is worth this summer.
