Top 5 Worst Arsenal Players This Season

It would be ignorant to say that the whole Arsenal squad was poor last season but there certainly are a few who the fans would immediately like to get rid of. Gabriel Martinelli has been outstanding throughout the season, managing to lead the club from the front. William Saliba also has been consistent enough to earn a real pat on the back.

So who have been the worst Arsenal players this season? We are sure to find out below. Let us know if you agree with this list or not and who you would like to add.

5. Nuno Tavares

The Portuguese international joined Arsenal in the 2021 summer window for £8million in order to provide competition to first choice left-back Kieran Tierney.

Tierney missed the majority of the season with serious knee and ankle injuries and Tavares was deployed in the left-back in the absence of the Scotland international. Tavares’ lack of defensive awareness has costed Arsenal a number of games. In the game against West Ham United, Tavares lost five duels and completed just one pass in 90 minutes.

Luckily the player is just 22 years old, and he still has time to work on his defensive side of the game.

4. Rob Holding

Due to his lack of quickness, he often gets caught out while venturing outside to cover Hector Bellerin, forcing Arsenal to sit deeper than Mikel Arteta would want. Holding is capable of some incredible performances, but he also has a history of making poor decisions during the season.

He has been a long-serving player for the Gunners but has missed 54 matches due to injuries. Although he has been somewhat decent this campaign, Holding made zero tackles and lost possession of the ball ten times last season.

3. Granit Xhaka

Granit Xhaka’s name in this list is a bit surprising because he was in good touch in the most part of season 2022/23. He was even named as Arsenal’s best player of 2021 by the CIES Football Observatory, who developed a unique methodology to determine who performed best irrespective of position.

The 31-year-old central midfielder has been brilliant this season but Arteta would secure a younger, more gifted replacement this summer.

2. Kieran Tierney

The 25-year-old left-back lost his regular spot to summer arrival Oleksandr Zinchenko who has been in brilliant form for the Gunners in his debut campaign.

He is yet to start a game for the Gunners since his last appearance on Boxing Day. Even though he is back to full fitness, he is struggling to get a nod over the Ukrainian defender. Many reports suggest that the Scottish defender would demand an exit in the summer window who was once a crowd favourite among Arsenal’s fans.

1. Mohamed Elneny

The 30-year-old midfielder is expected to leave this summer even though he signed a contract extension until 2024. The Egyptian midfielder made only eight appearances this season after falling down the pecking order in north London. He has endured a difficult campaign with a thigh injury and more recently a knee issue restricting him to only a few appearances.

Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey have the two midfield spots on lock under Mikel Arteta while January signing Jorginho remains waiting in the wings to step in when required. Elneny has been linked with a move away from the Emirates with Besiktas and Aston Villa showing interest in the Egyptian.
