Is he the right choice for the armband though?

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has been made permanent captain by manager Unai Emery, according to reports.

The decision comes after the departure of former Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny, who forced a move to Bordeaux in the summer. Over the course of the 2018/19 season, the on-pitch captaincy was shared between Mesut Ozil, Nacho Monreal, Petr Cech, Aaron Ramsey and Koscienly.

However the departures of Cech, Koscielny and Ramsey has forced Unai Emery to restructure his leadership group and it was revealed this week the squad had a blind vote on the matter.

Respected BBC journalist David Ornstein, who is regarded as an authoritative voice when it comes to Arsenal, has confirmed that Granit Xhaka is set to be announced the permanent Arsenal captain.

The Swiss has already captained his side for six of their eight matches so far this season, and will now do so for the foreseeable future. While he may not be a firm fans’ favorite, it’s no secret that the midfielder has long garnered respect from the coaching and playing staff in North London.

Xhaka, who turns 27 today, is the captain of his country and was captain at Borussia Moenchengladbach before he moved to the Emirates.

There is no confirmation on the vice captain, but the contenders are reported to be last year’s player of the season, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the Gunners’ top scorer Alexandre Lacazette.
