Granit Xhaka signs new long tern contract with Arsenal

Unai Emery labelled him as an important player

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has signed a new long term contract with the club. Although the length of his contract remains undisclosed.

The midfielder joined the Gunners from Borussia Mönchengladbach for a reported fee of £35 million. He has been a regular for the club since then, though has been criticized for his performances few times.

The 25 year old featured in all 38 Premier League games last season under Arsene Wenger, starting 37 and making a single appearance off the bench. He managed to score 3 goals and assisted 7 in 47 appearances.

“Hi Gunners, it’s Granit, I’m happy and proud to sign a new contract here for Arsenal,” Switzerland International said in a video message posted on social media. I hope for good results in the future.”

His future was reportedly uncertain following Wenger’s exit but the Premier League giants new head coach Unai Emery has indicated that he will take a central role next season and looking forward to work with him.

“I’m delighted that Granit has extended his contract with us,” Emery told Arsenal’s website as quoted by Goal.

“He’s an important member of the squad and is still young so will be able to develop even more.

“I hope he has a successful World Cup with Switzerland and comes back fit and ready for the new season.”

He has been joined by Switzerland team-mate Stefan Lichtsteiner at the Emirates this summer, and the ex-Juventus right-back said: “I’ve known Granit now for more than six or seven years, he’s just an amazing player,

“Off the pitch he is just a great person, a great character, very calm – he knows when he can joke and he knows when to concentrate. A top professional player on the pitch, great passing and just a great player.”
