It seems like Mikel Arteta has handed Matteo Guendouzi a lifeline at Arsenal ahead of the 2020/21 season.
The Gunners have been unsuccessful in their attempts to sell him this summer. Thus, they have decided to utilize him after all in their preparation ahead of the new campaign.
Arsenal offered Guendouzi plus cash in return for Lyon’s Houssem Auoar. Sporting director of the Ligue 1 outfit, Juninho said, “I get on very well with the Sporting Director (Edu). We spoke on the phone. Houssem Aouar is really well-liked by Arteta.
There were some discussions for Mattéo Guendouzi, who is also a good player. He was brought up during the discussion. But we don’t need his profile, we were very clear. If it is like that, we are not interested at all, we cut the conversation, that is where things ended.”
Arteta has suddenly taken a different direction in handling both Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi. In the time leading up to the new season, the Spaniard said, “I have spoken to Matteo during the break and I have been really clear that everybody starts from zero.
“What you did two weeks ago or two years ago doesn’t really matter. It’s what you are able to contribute to the team now. I have told Guendouzi that at the moment he’s like any other player in the squad. He deserves to be treated exactly the same and I will do that to the best of my capability.”
This has inspired a reaction out of the midfielder who tweeted after his final game with the France U21s side, “2 games, 6 points! Proud of my team… Now let’s get back to work Arsenal.”
Fans will be taken back by the sudden turn of events concerning both Guendouzi and Ozil. Have Arsenal completely given up on adding newer talents that they are forced to use whatever options they have at hand?
