Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has claimed he has always played a leading role at Arsenal and wearing the armband won’t have an effect on his playing style.
Ozil has been given the charge to lead his team on the pitch as Unai Emery decided to give the armband to him. The manager announced the German as one of his vice captains at the start of the season and later on he went on to wear the captain’s band in the last four matches.
Ozil has been the centre of Emery’s strategy and has featured in 10 games this term. He has been targeted for his laidback attitude for a number of times but the 30 year old has made it clear he is not going to change his game despite being handed the captaincy.
“Whether I have the captaincy or not, my goal is to help the team in the best way.
“To wear the captaincy is an honour. It’s Arsenal. And I’m proud of that.
“To go out and wear the captain’s armband and lead this group is something special and I’m proud of that.”
“But does it change me? No. It’s who I am, I was always like that. It doesn’t change my attitude. I’m the captain because of who I am. I don’t need to change who I am.”
“In the end it is the manager’s decision to give someone the captaincy. I cannot say if I deserved it or not.”
