Michael Owen explained to fans of both Arsenal and Manchester United why the weekend Premier League fixture is far more important than any of their European outings.
The Red Devils managed an inspiring 1-3 comeback victory against Paris Saint-Germain this week to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League why Arsenal slumped to an embarrassing 3-1 defeat against Rennes.
Speaking on Arsenal’s form this season, Owen said, ”Tonight was a big disappointment, no getting away from it. But that’s what Arsenal are, they’re an inconsistent team. You never know what team is going to turn up.”
“I think it’s really important for Arsenal. I think if Manchester United win, go four points clear, then it’s going to be hard for Arsenal. Manchester United have got the momentum as well. So I don’t think Arsenal can afford to lose the game if they want to get in the top four.”
Thursday’s loss did make it extra hard for the Gunners to sneak their way into the Champions League next season by eventually winning the Europa League competition.
Hence, winning the weekend tie and retaining a spot in the top four of the Premier League remains at the very top of their agenda as well as Manchester United’s. Owen’s former side could run away from Arsenal by claiming a victory at the Emirates.
He further added, “You mustn’t forget or cast your mind back too far, in the North London derby I thought Arsenal were very good against a very good team.”
“So you can’t get too despondent. Yes, Manchester United have snuck ahead of them in the race for fourth place. So it’s a huge game for Arsenal, a massive game. But they did play well in their last league game.”
