Mikel Arteta looking to replace Aaron Ramsdale's position at goal for Arsenal this season

Summer signing David Raya is putting increased pressure on Arsenal custodian Aaron Ramsdale to give up his spot

The Gunners signed Raya on a permanent basis in a deal for a total of £30m next year after initially signing him on loan from Brentford last month to provide elite competition between the sticks.

Since helping Brentford gain promotion to the Premier League in 2021, Raya has established himself as one of the league’s top goalkeepers. Since receiving his first senior call-up 18 months ago, Raya has been included in every Spain squad, including the team that won the Nations League championships this summer.

Nevertheless, despite his notoriety, he has yet to play for Arsenal and has started each of the team’s three Premier League games from the bench as a backup.

But everything might change. According to The Daily Mail, manager Mike Arteta is “seriously considering” giving Raya a longer stint with the team fairly soon. It appears like Arteta would give Raya a chance despite Ramsdale’s apparent strengths, which have allowed him to establish himself in the England squad and even make the 2022–23 PFA Team of the Year.

Raya, who is renowned for his technical skill, reportedly made an impression during training. There is a good likelihood that Raya will make his Arsenal debut against Brentford in the Carabao Cup third round at the end of September if Arteta doesn’t make the switch sooner. Competition regulations, unlike those of the Premier League, would permit the 27-year-old to compete against his parent club as long as they don’t object, which isn’t seen to be likely.
